GR11 Stage 01: Cap de Creus - El Port de la Selva

We begin the great adventure of the Trans-Pyrenees walking through the magical territory of Cap de Creus, where the Pyrenees merge with the sea

The Cap de Creus Natural Park is the place where the Pyrenees surpass the Mediterranean Sea. This union between land and sea gives rise to an exceptional landscape, one of the great jewels of the Catalan Pyrenees for its great uniqueness and beauty. The first two stages of the GR 11 -the great Trans-Pyrenees crossing- allow us to discover this magical place that the water and the north wind have been shaping for millions of years.

Rock climbing

One of the most traditional disciplines in the municipality.

With the passionate and invaluable work of a few residents, La Jonquera has managed to position itself in the Empordà and Catalunya as a benchmark for rock climbing.

The Centre Excursionista Jonquerenc (CEJ) has created several rock climbing sectors within the municipality of La Jonquera:

The Carpe Diem sector.
The Miradones sector.
The Mount Amour sector.
The La Joieria sector.
The La Frontier sector.
The Puig del Corb sector.

Hiking around Requesens Castle

Requesens Castle is located near the town of La Jonquera, in the Alt Empordà, 7 km east of the town of Cantallops.

In a wooded area, the Requesens castle stands out in the middle of the valley. The valley and mountain that gave its name to the castle have been a border and a crossing point since Roman times. The Albera ridge was already the boundary between the Roman provinces of Gaul and Hispania. During the Visigothic period, the area was forgotten, but regained importance with the counties of Empúries and Rosselló in the 12th century.

Santuari de La Salut de Terrades-Santa Magdalena

Short and easy walk, which climbs from the Santuari de La Salut de Terrades, in the Alt Empordà, to the top of Santa Magdalena, crowned with the Romanesque hermitage of the same name.

It is a walk to do quietly in less than 2 hours (round trip), but it offers fantastic views from the highest point: the eastern Pyrenees, which can be traced until they die at sea, the Bay of Roses , the whole Empordà plain and the Salines-Bassegoda massif, basically.

Ermita de Santa Llúcia (La Jonquera)

Quiet hiking route to a small hermitage of Romanesque origin, surrounded by forest and with open views over the area.

An ideal walk to combine nature and heritage in the surroundings of La Jonquera, with sections of track and path and a very pleasant atmosphere to disconnect.

Perfect for a half-day outing; we recommend bringing comfortable shoes and water, especially on hot days. Moderate gradient.
